late night reading

lil' b spent last week at school learning about Egypt. He's four, so the lessons were rather superficial, but he did come home with a fascination with headdresses and mummies. This prompted a rather enlightening (and fully interactive) discussion between Daddy-B, lil' b and myself about the differences between mummies and zombies.

Our conclusions:
Zombies shuffle and make moaning, garbled noises. They trudge along with vacant eyes and arms down limp at the sides. Head is usually slumped to the side.

Mummies walk without bending their knees, and groan without opening their mouths. Arms are extended straight in front, head is usually upright.*

*Mummy posture and locomotion is similar to Frankenstein's monster, but Frankenstein's monster's communication more closely resembles a zombie.

He took this information to school the next day and enlightened his classmates.

I was introduced to this "series" by a friend, a fellow knitter and mother, who has her fingers more firmly on the geek pulse than I do. At her insistence, I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and was thoroughly taken in. So now, of course, I am digging into the prequel, Dawn of the Dreadfuls. Go ahead and click on the picture above if you want to find out more about it.

I admire those who are geekier than I, because I feel like I could be one of them if I just tried a bit harder. I have all the right interests, but something seems to be lacking. Perhaps a degree in IT or something.

Several more rows are complete on the woodland sweater, but I did not get to finish a quarter row on the quilt last night.

Tonight I'll work more on the woodland sweater, since my zombie-loving friend and I are going out to KIP at a local pub. Perhaps I'll have a mid-sleeve update tomorrow.

I think Dawn is a much stronger read, but if you like Jane Austen, Pride is good, too. You kind of have to read Pride before Dawn, or it won't make any sense.

It's a bit creepy, but mostly morbidly funny. It's interesting how they inject the gore and weirdness of zombies into proper English settings.

I'd recommend it. It isn't the best book I've ever read, but it's good. :)
